  • Adjusting the timing belt tension (camshaft drive)

Excessive timing belt tension leads to increased wear of the water pump bearings and tension roller.

If the timing belt tension is weak, the valve timing may be disrupted due to the belt jumping over the teeth on the camshaft pulley. In addition, a violation of the adjustment in either direction leads to increased wear of the timing belt.

To restore the timing belt tension, a tension roller 3 is installed in the camshaft drive mechanism (figure 4.4), by turning it around an eccentrically located axis, the tension of the timing belt is adjusted.

To adjust the timing belt tension (camshaft drive) on the car you will need: a cap wrench "on 17" (or a socket head with a ratchet handle), tension roller wrench (if you don't have one, you can use two 4mm drills and a large screwdriver).

1. Remove the front timing belt cover (camshaft drive) (cm. "Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke").

2. Smoothly (without jerks) turn the crankshaft by the pulley mounting bolt approximately one turn clockwise (to make it easier to turn the crankshaft, you can remove the spark plugs).

3. Turn the crankshaft slightly, about two teeth of the camshaft pulley, in the opposite direction (counterclockwise), to loosen the tension on the drive side of the timing belt.

4. Check the timing belt tension. A correctly tensioned timing belt should turn 90° with finger force (1.5-2 kgf) applied in the middle between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.

4. Check the timing belt tension. A correctly tensioned timing belt should turn 90° with finger…

5. If the timing belt tension does not correspond to the specified value, loosen the tension roller mounting nut. To tighten the timing belt, turn the tension roller counterclockwise (approximately 10-15°), to loosen it - clockwise.

5. If the timing belt tension does not correspond to the specified value, loosen the tension roller…

6. If you do not have a special key, insert two drills into the holes in the roller and turn the roller with a screwdriver.

7. Tighten the roller mounting nut and check the timing belt tension again by performing steps 2-4.
