The engine will not start
Problems with starting the engine on a Lada Kalina car can be divided into two main groups depending on the degree of engine heating.
Engine cold
At least 6 hours have passed since the engine was stopped at an outside air temperature of +20°C and at least 3 hours at -20°C, the temperature of the oil in the engine crankcase coincides with the ambient temperature.
1. Pull the hood latch handle towards you and open the hood.
2. Use a dipstick to measure the oil level in the engine. The engine oil level must be between the marks «MAX» And «MIN».
3. Check the coolant level. The coolant level should be as shown in the photo.
4. Carefully inspect the engine and engine compartment. Pay attention to drips of gasoline, oil, brake and coolant fluids. Make sure the electrical wiring is intact.
5. Without closing the hood (cover the hood in case of rain or snow), get behind the wheel. Check the fit of the high-voltage wires in the sockets of the ignition coils, on the candles. Before starting the engine, switch on the ignition by turning the ignition key to position «I». At the same time, the electric fuel pump will turn on for 2 seconds.
6. Turn the ignition key and start the engine on the Lada Kalina car.
If the engine on a Lada Kalina car does not start, there are three main reasons:
- the engine start system does not work;
- the ignition system does not work;
- the engine power system is not working.
Engine warm or hot
The oil temperature in the crankcase is higher than the ambient temperature. To start the engine, turn on the starter without touching the pedal «gas» accelerator. The engine management system will independently set the fuel supply and ignition parameters necessary for starting.
If the engine on a Lada Kalina car does not start, there are three main reasons:
- the engine start system does not work;
- the ignition system does not work;
- the engine power system is not working.
Faults in the starting system
Malfunctions in the engine starting system are manifested in the abnormal operation of the starter. There are five main starter malfunctions.
1. The starter does not turn on. The reason is a violation of the contact connections, an open or short circuit in the starter switching circuits, a malfunction of the starter traction relay.
2. When the starter is turned on, multiple clicks are heard. The reason is a malfunction of the holding winding of the traction relay, the battery is very discharged, the contact connections in the starter circuit are loose.
3. The starter turns on, but its armature either does not rotate or rotates slowly. The reason is that the battery is discharged, the contact connections are broken, the contacts of the starter traction relay are burnt, the collector is dirty or the brushes are worn out, interturn or short circuit in the starter windings.
4. The starter turns on, its armature rotates, but the flywheel remains stationary. The reason is the weakening of the starter attachment to the clutch housing, damage to the teeth of the flywheel or drive gear, slipping of the drive freewheel, breakage of the lever, drive ring or buffer spring of the starter drive.
5. The starter does not turn off after starting the engine. The reason is a malfunction of the starter freewheel, sintering of the contacts of the traction relay. In the event of such a malfunction, stop the engine immediately!
These malfunctions require qualified intervention in a car service or upon arrival at the garage (see sect. 9 «electrical equipment»). Beforehand, you can only check the degree of discharge of the battery using a voltmeter (for example, as part of an autotester) and tightening of contact connections in the starter circuit.
Checking the ignition system
1. With the ignition off, check the integrity and fit of the high-voltage wires in the sockets of the ignition coil.
2. Check the ignition coil (see sect. 9 Electrical equipment «Checking the ignition coil and high voltage wires»).
3. If the ignition coil low voltage circuit is OK, check for spark at the spark plugs. Remove the high voltage wire from any spark plug. Insert a spare spark plug into the end of the wire and press it with the metal part against «mass» car Lada Kalina. Turn the engine crankshaft with the starter. 4. If there is no spark, replace the high voltage wires with new ones. You can first try to install non-new, but proven high-voltage wires, «from a working machine».
5. If there is no spark after replacing the high-voltage wires, replace the ignition coil (see sect. 9 Electrical equipment ««Removal and installation of the ignition coil»). If there is a spark, but the engine on the Lada Kalina car does not start, replace the spark plugs with new ones. You can also first try to install non-new, but proven spark plugs, «from a working machine».
6. If after that the engine on the car Lada Kalina does not start, check the engine management system (see «Fuel Injection System Malfunctions»).
Checking the engine power system
The main indicator of the health of the engine power system on a Lada Kalina car is the fuel pressure in the fuel rail. But first, we recommend checking the condition of the air filter (see «Replacing the air filter element»), since this work is simple and does not take much time. After you make sure that the air filter is clean, check the reliability of the electrical contacts in the wiring harness blocks of the injection system units responsible for supplying fuel (electric fuel pump, injectors).
If all checked elements are working, check the pressure in the power system (see «Checking fuel pressure in the power system»).
The following reasons for pressure drop are possible:
- clogged fuel filter;
- - Faulty fuel pump. The fuel pump module has a built-in fuel pressure regulator, so the cause of the drop in fuel pressure, in addition to a malfunction of the pump itself, may be a malfunction of the fuel pressure regulator. In both cases, the fuel pump must be removed from the Lada Kalina car for repair.
You can find ways to troubleshoot these problems in Sec. «Engine» (see «Supply system»).
