1. Remove the alternator from the vehicle (see «Removal and installation of the generator»).
2. Remove the voltage regulator (see «Checking and replacing the voltage regulator with a capacitor and brush holder»).
3. Pry off the contacts of the diode bridge with a screwdriver and remove the leads of the generator stator windings from them.
4. Check for an open in the generator stator windings. To do this, connect an ohmmeter in turn to the terminals of one of the windings (tester). If it shows infinity, then there is a break in the windings and the generator stator needs to be replaced.
5. Check the short circuit of the generator stator windings for «mass». To do this, connect one wire of an ohmmeter to the output of the stator winding, and the second to the generator housing. If the ohmmeter shows infinity, then there is no short circuit.
6. Check up short circuit of windings of a stator of the generator among themselves. To do this, connect one wire of an ohmmeter to the output of one of the windings, and the second to the other winding. If the ohmmeter shows infinity, then there is no short circuit.
7. Check with an ohmmeter (tester) the resistance of the generator rotor winding by connecting it to slip rings. If the ohmmeter shows infinity, then there is a break in the windings and the rotor needs to be replaced. 8. Check the voltage regulator and capacitor (see «Checking and replacing the voltage regulator with a capacitor and brush holder»).
9. You can check the rectifier unit both on the removed generator and without removing the generator from the car. Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to the terminal «B+» generator, and the second - to the generator housing. If the ohmmeter shows infinity, then there is no break and all diodes are working.
10. If there is a break, then check the diodes separately. Connect one wire to «mass» rectifier unit, and the second to the diode terminal, then swap the wires. The diode should pass current only in one direction; If the diode passes current in both directions, then it is faulty.
11. Loosen the outlet fastening nut «B+» and remove it along with washers.
12. Turn out three bolts of fastening of the rectifier block to the generator case and remove the rectifier block.
13. Mark the relative position of the generator covers...
14.... unscrew the four coupling bolts, remove the washers...
15.... and, prying with a screwdriver, remove the generator cover from the side of the slip rings.
16. Clamp the generator pulley in a vise, having previously placed gaskets under it and holding the generator rotor from falling, and then unscrew the pulley fastening nut.
17. Remove the spring washer from the pulley and remove the pulley from the generator rotor shaft.
18. Screw the pulley fastening nut onto the rotor shaft and press the rotor shaft out of the generator cover bearing on the drive side through the wooden spacer with light hammer blows.
19. Examine a cover of the generator from a drive end in gathering with the bearing.
20. If during the rotation of the bearing of the generator cover, play is felt between the rings, rolling or jamming of the rolling elements, protective rings are damaged or there are lubricant leaks, cracks are found in the cover, especially in the places where the generator is attached, it is necessary to replace the generator cover assembly with the bearing (the bearing in the cap is rolled).
21. Check up ease of rotation of the bearing from slip rings. If during the rotation of the bearing there is play between the rings, rolling or jamming of the rolling elements, the protective rings are damaged or there are grease leaks, the bearing must be replaced. To do this, use a puller to press the bearing off the generator rotor shaft and press on a new bearing using a suitable mandrel, applying force to the inner race of the bearing.
22. Examine a cover of the generator from slip rings. If cracks are found, the generator cover must be replaced. Inspect the plastic bearing sleeve, if the sleeve is damaged or cracked, replace it.
23. Collect and establish on the car the generator in an order, the return to removal.
