Low engine oil pressure

There is a warning light on the car's dashboard to indicate low engine oil pressure. For reliable engine operation, it is necessary that the engine lubrication system is constantly provided with sufficiently high pressure.

Warning! If the low oil pressure warning light comes on while the engine is running and stays on at high engine speeds, this is a warning sign. You must stop driving immediately, turn off the engine and find out the cause. Continued operation of the engine with low oil pressure can lead to serious engine damage and large financial costs for repairs.

Checking the engine lubrication system

1. Open the hood of the car. Do not rush to check the oil level in the engine immediately, let it drain into the oil pan, this will take two to three minutes. During this time, carefully inspect the engine and find out if there are any fresh oil leaks.

2. Look under the front of the car to see if the engine oil pan is punctured or if there is a leak.

3. Pay special attention to the oil filter. Oil may leak from under the rubber gasket of the oil filter if it is damaged or the oil filter is not properly secured. If oil is leaking from under the oil filter, sometimes it is enough to turn it a little clockwise.

Warning: Be careful: hot engine parts can burn you, so wear gloves and long sleeves.

4. Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth and reinsert it. Remove the dipstick again and check the engine oil level. The oil level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks. 5. If the engine oil level is below the "MIN" mark, add oil to the norm; for this, you can use a funnel made from the neck of a cut plastic bottle.

4. Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth and reinsert it. Remove the dipstick again and…

6. Start the engine. If the oil pressure warning light goes out when the level is normal, you can continue driving. If the light still comes on, check the oil pressure sensor for proper operation. The oil pressure sensor on the car is installed in the cylinder head. Unscrew the standard oil pressure sensor and install a mechanical pressure gauge in its place. If at normal idle speed the pressure is more than 0.06 MPa (0.65 kgf/cm².) and increases with increasing speed, the oil pressure sensor or its electrical circuit is faulty.

If after eliminating all visible causes the oil pressure in the engine is insufficient (the oil pressure warning light is on), engine diagnostics and repair is required (see section. "Engine").
