Recommendation. If, when the engine is running, a loud noise from a rotating bearing is heard in the area under the front timing belt covers (see "Checking the technical condition of the engine"), you should check the condition of the tension and guide rollers and replace them if necessary. This can be done without removing the belt. The rollers should also be replaced during routine replacement of the timing belt (see "Timing Belt - Replacement").

Examination

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Remove the upper front timing belt cover (see "Timing Belt - Checking Condition").

3. Using a 15 mm wrench, loosen the tension roller mounting bolt by half a turn to loosen the timing belt tension.

Note: To replace the rollers without removing the timing belt, simply loosen the belt tension. In this case, there is a risk of the belt jumping over the pulley teeth, which will lead to a shift in the valve timing. Therefore, before releasing the belt tension, align the mark on the camshaft pulleys with the protrusions on the rear belt cover (see "Timing Belt - Replacement"). After installing the rollers, the marks should not shift.

4. Remove the timing belt (see "Timing Belt - Replacement") from the tension roller.

5. Rotate the tension and guide rollers to check their condition.

Rollers that have play and make a lot of noise when rotating must be replaced.

Removal

1. Using a 15 mm wrench, unscrew the tension roller mounting bolt and remove the roller together with the bolt.

2. Remove the guide roller in the same way.

Installation

1. Install the guide roller and tighten its mounting bolt to a torque of 33.2-41.2 Nm (3.4-4.2 kgf·m).

2. Install the tension roller without tightening the mounting bolt.

3. Put the timing belt on the pulleys and adjust its tension (see "Timing Belt - Replacement").

4. Install the removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
