If the engine power drops, periodic howling sounds are heard, or increased noise is heard when the fuel pump is running, then most likely the fuel pump has failed.

First, check the fuel pressure in the vehicle by connecting a pressure gauge to the fitting on the fuel rail in the engine compartment (see "Checking the fuel pressure in the engine fuel system").

If the pressure in the fuel system is higher than 400 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm².), then the pressure regulator installed in the fuel pump module is faulty and must be replaced (see "Fuel pump repair (fuel pump)").

If the pressure in the engine fuel system is below 380 kPa (3.8 kgf/cm².), replace the fuel filter (see "Replacing the fuel filter").

If this does not help, try removing the fuel pump and cleaning the filter in its receiver. If the pressure still does not increase, the fuel pump must be replaced.

To remove, install and replace the fuel pump on a car, you will need: a screwdriver, a punch, a hammer.

1. Reduce the pressure in the engine fuel system (see "Reduced fuel pressure in the engine fuel system").

2. Fold the rear seat cushion forward (see "Folding the rear seat").

9. Remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank, tilting it to the side so as not to bend the fuel level indicator sensor lever and not to turn the float on the lever. Otherwise, the fuel gauge readings on the instrument panel will be incorrect.

10. Remove the rubber sealing ring from the fuel tank flange. If the ring is too tight, hardened or torn, it must be replaced to avoid fuel leakage.

11. Install the fuel pump and all removed parts on the vehicle in the reverse order of removal. After installation, tighten the spring plate for fastening the fuel pump a little with light blows of a hammer through a punch.
