Removal and installation the outer tie rod end and replacing the ball joint boot (Kalina 1118)

If the vehicle has increased steering wheel free play, check the axial and radial clearances in the ball joints of the steering rods. If there is any looseness in the ball joint or corrosion has appeared on the ball stud, replace the ball joint assembly with the tip.

Bent inner tie rod ends must be replaced.

To remove and install the outer tie rod end and replace the ball joint protective cover on a vehicle, you will need: pliers, 13, 19, and 27 mm wrenches.

1. Remove the corresponding front wheel from the vehicle.

2. Clean the tie rod end to steering arm mounting nut and apply WD-40 type liquid wrench to the threaded connection to make it easier to loosen the nut.



3. Loosen the tie rod end mounting bolt.



4. Squeeze the cotter pin and remove it from the ball joint.

6. ...and press out the ball joint pin using a puller.



7. Unscrew the steering rod mounting nut and remove the rod from the hole.



8. Unscrew the tip from the steering rod, counting the number of turns. This will help to approximately maintain the toe-in of the wheels on the vehicle when installing the steering tip.





9. If you need to replace the steering linkage, unscrew it, also counting the number of turns when unscrewing.

10. Install the steering tip in the reverse order of removal. Before tightening the tie rod end mounting bolt and pressing in the ball joint of the outer tie rod end, make sure that the plane of the joint is parallel to the support surface of the steering arm. Adjust the ball joint if necessary.

11. Tighten the ball joint pin nut to the required torque and turn it until the nearest slot in the nut for the cotter pin aligns. After installing the steering tip, check and adjust the wheel alignment angles if necessary.



12. Remove the dust boot seal ring.



13. Remove the dust boot spring ring.





14. Remove the boot from the tie rod end.



15. Remove the dirty top layer of grease (if it is noticeable that dirt has gotten inside the hinge, then such a hinge will have to be replaced) and apply new grease. Fill the new boot halfway with grease and install it on the joint, pushing the boot edge onto the seat on the joint body until it stops.

16. Install the spring and sealing rings.

17. Check the correct installation of the rings and the tightness of the dust boot edges.
