Front Brake Caliper — Removal, Repair and Installation (Vesta 2180)

The front brake caliper is removed for replacement or repair if a leak appears through the piston boot or if the piston is seized. The need to perform work can be determined during the inspection of the technical condition of the brake system (see "Brake system - checking technical condition"). If the piston is jammed in the cylinder due to corrosion and oxide formation, it is advisable to replace the caliper. If a leak occurs from the cylinder due to damage or wear of the piston seal, the caliper can be repaired or replaced.

To repair the brake caliper, you will need a repair kit consisting of the parts shown in the photo.



To complete the job, you will need a rubber bulb and special lubricant for brake mechanisms.

Removal

1. Prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Remove the cover of the main brake cylinder reservoir and use a rubber bulb to pump out some of the brake fluid (see "Hydraulic brake drive - bleeding").



3. Remove the front wheel (see "Wheel replacement").

4. Using a slotted screwdriver, press the outer shoe away from the bracket, pushing the piston into the caliper cylinder.

5. Remove the brake hose (see "Brake hoses - replacement").

6. Remove the front brake pads (see "Front brake pads - replacement") and support.

7. Remove the guide pins.



8. Remove the protective cover.



9. Clean your fingers with a rag and inspect carefully. If there is wear, replace the pins.

10. Apply special grease for brake mechanisms to the guide pins...



...and put a small amount of grease into the protective covers.





11. Put the fingers back in place. The fingers should move smoothly, without jamming. Otherwise, they must be replaced.

Caliper repair

1. Using a screwdriver, remove the piston dust cover.



2. Apply a small amount of compressed air pressure to the brake fluid inlet and push out the piston, placing a wooden block underneath to avoid damaging the piston.



3. Remove the piston.





4. Using a thin slotted screwdriver, pry up and remove the piston seal.



5. Replace the removed dust cover and cuff, inspect the surfaces of the piston and cylinder. If there are signs of wear, scratches or corrosion, we replace the parts.

6. Before assembly, lubricate the parts with clean brake fluid.

7. Assemble the caliper in reverse order. When installing the boot, carefully, so as not to tear it, insert it onto the caliper using a slotted screwdriver.

Installation

1. Install the caliper in reverse order.

2. Remove air from the hydraulic brake system (see "Hydraulic brake drive - bleeding") and make sure that the connection between the hose and the caliper is tight.
