Steering column — removal and installation (Granta 2190)

Note: Depending on the purpose of the work, the steering column can be removed together with the steering wheel and steering column paddles. The work is shown with partial disassembly of the steering column.

Removal

1. Prepare the car for work and remove the terminal from the negative terminal of the battery ("Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. Turn the steering wheel to the position corresponding to driving in a straight line. We remove the steering wheel ("Steering wheel - removal and installation")

3. Remove the decorative steering column trims ("Decorative steering column trims - removal and installation").

4. Remove the lower instrument panel trim ("Mounting Block - Replacing Fuses and Relays").

5. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the steering column switches and the contact ring ("Steering column switches - removal, inspection and installation").

6. Using an 8 mm open-end wrench, loosen the clamping bolt and remove the connector assembly with the steering column switches and the contact ring.



7. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring harness connectors ("Ignition switch (lock) - removal and installation").



8. Releasing the clamps, disconnect the three wiring harness blocks from the electric power steering.



9. On the other side of the amplifier, disconnect the wiring harness.

Note: The steering column can be removed together with the intermediate shaft. However, it is more convenient to remove and install the steering column if you disconnect the intermediate shaft. The connection of the intermediate shaft cardan joint flanges is possible only in one position, so it is not necessary to mark their relative positions.

10. Using a 13 mm open-end wrench, unscrew the nut of the clamping bolt of the flange of the lower cardan joint of the intermediate shaft. We remove the bolt.



11. Using a 13 mm socket wrench, loosen the two nuts on the lower mounting of the steering column.





12. Using the same wrench, unscrew the two nuts of the upper steering column mount.



13. Remove the steering column assembly.

Installation

We install the steering column in the reverse order. Before installation, make sure that the front wheels are in a straight-ahead position, and that the groove on the shaft and the mark on the steering gear housing cover, as well as the marks on the protective cover, are positioned properly (see photo).

The protective cover must be placed on the steering gear shaft so that mark A is located opposite the angular recess 1 located in the crankcase cover, and the shaft is turned so that its groove 2 is located opposite mark B of the protective cover.

Tighten the nuts of the tie bolts on the intermediate shaft flanges to a torque of 23-28 N·m (2.3-2.8 kgf·m). Tighten the steering column mounting nuts to a torque of 15-18.6 N·m (1.5-1.9 kgf·m).
