1. Drain the gearbox oil (see «Changing the oil in the gearbox»).
2. Turn out screws of fastening of decorative caps of forward wheels …
3.... and remove the caps.
4. Prying off with a screwdriver, remove the protective caps of the front hubs.
Attention! The caps are equipped with sealing rubber rings. Don't lose them.
5. Loosen the hub nuts by straightening the bent collars of the nuts.
6. socket wrench «at 30» Loosen wheel bolts and hub nuts. The hub nuts are tightened with a large torque, so it is recommended to use, for example, a piece of pipe as a lever.
Attention! When loosening the hub nuts, the vehicle must be on the ground. Loosen and tighten the wheel bolts only with the vehicle on the ground. Bolt tightening torque 65–95 Nm (6.5–9.5 kgf·m).
7. Brake the vehicle with the parking brake, place chocks under the rear wheels and raise the front of the vehicle to secure stands. Remove the front wheels. After that, finally unscrew the hub nuts and remove the thrust washers installed under them.
Attention! Do not reuse hub nuts.
8. Disconnect the steering knuckles from the suspension arms by turning the wrench «at 17» two ball joint bolts on each side.
9. Pushing the shock absorber strut outward, remove the splined shank of the left drive inner joint housing from the wheel hub.
10. Similarly disconnect the right drive from a nave.
Note. The movement of the shock absorber struts is prevented by steering rods. In order to eliminate their influence, when disconnecting from the left drive hub, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, and when disconnecting the right drive, turn it to the left.
11. Using a mounting spatula, press out the shank of the inner joint from the gear of the differential axle shaft...
12.... and remove the left drive.
Attention! If you intend to remove both drives at once, then after removing the left drive, insert a technological plug into the gearbox instead (e.g. old inner hinge). Only then remove the second drive. Otherwise, the side gears of the differential may move and the drives cannot be installed.
13. Press the right drive out of the half shaft gear and remove it.
Attention! Be sure to remove the front clutch housing cover before disconnecting from the right hand drive gearbox (see «Removal and installation of a transmission», With. 150), otherwise it will be bent by the mounting blade and, when the engine is running, the flywheel may touch it.
14. Before installing the drives, be sure to replace the circlips on the shanks of the housings of the internal hinges, otherwise the drive may spontaneously pop out of the side gear during movement.
15. To install the drive, first insert the splined shank of the outer joint housing into the wheel hub, install the thrust washer and screw the hub nut until it stops without completely tightening it.
16. Then insert the splined shank of the inboard joint housing into the inboard joint oil seal and turn the drive shaft slightly to match the splines of the shank and the axle gear.
17. Pull down the front suspension arm and with a sharp movement of the shock absorber strut with a steering knuckle, press the drive into the axle shaft gear until the drive is fixed with the retaining ring.
18. Check the reliability of the fixation of the drive in the axle gear: grasp the fist of the shock absorber with your hands and try to forcefully pull the hinge shank out of the gearbox. If this succeeds, try again to press the drive into the gearbox. If after the second attempt it was possible to remove the drive by hand, replace the retaining ring with another one.
19. Install the second drive in the same way, having removed the technological plug from the axle shaft gear.
20. Attach the ball joints of the shock absorber struts to the steering knuckles (see point 8).
21. Install the wheels and screw in the wheel bolts until they stop, without completely tightening them.
22. Install the car on the wheels, removing it from the supports, and tighten the hub nuts to the torque specified in Appendix 1.
Attention! It is strictly forbidden to move the car with loose hub nuts in order to avoid damage to the hub bearing separators.
23. Lock the hub nuts by bending (e.g. with a large screwdriver) lock collars of nuts into the grooves of the shanks of the outer hinge housings.
24. Install hub caps.
25. Tighten the wheel bolts to the torque specified in Appendix 1.
26. Install wheel covers.
27. Fill the gearbox with oil (see «Changing the oil in the gearbox»).
