Note. Check the condition of the working surfaces of the brake disc without removing it from the car.
You will need: wheel bolt wrench, screwdriver, caliper.
1. Remove the wheel.
2. Clean the brake disc.
3. Measure the disc thickness with a vernier caliper. Minimum allowable disc thickness 17.8 mm (tab. 4.2). If the disc is thinner, replace it (see «Removal and installation of a brake disk of a forward wheel»).
Table 4.2. Maximum allowable dimensions of brake pads, discs and drums
Note. We recommend replacing the brake discs on both sides at the same time.
4. Examine the disk. If there are scratches, the disc can be removed and polished, but taking into account that its final thickness is not less than the allowable one.
5. With a screwdriver, check the ease of movement of the pads in the caliper. Make sure they don't pinch the brake disc.
6. Check the condition of the pads through the hole in the brake caliper housing. If the thickness of the friction linings is less than the permissible (see table. 4.2), replace the brake pads (see «Replacing the brake pads of the brake mechanism of the front wheel»).
Note. In case of uneven wear of the lining or uneven wear of the linings of one brake mechanism, replace the entire caliper assembly or working cylinders (see «Removal and installation of the working cylinder of the forward brake mechanism»).
7. To check the degree of wear of the brake pads of the rear brake mechanism, remove the wheel and brake drum (see «Removal and installation of a brake drum of a back wheel»).
8. Measure the thickness of the friction linings with a caliper or ruler.
Recommendations
Replace pads in the following cases:
- lining thickness less than 1.5 mm;
- the surface of the pads is oiled;
- pads are loosely connected to the base.
9. Measure diameter of a working surface of a brake drum. If it is more than allowed (see table. 4.2), replace the drum (see «Removal and installation of a brake drum of a back wheel»).
