Checking the timing belt tension (Priora 2170)

Regularly check the condition and tension of the timing belt and adjust the tension if necessary. When the belt tension is weakened, its teeth wear out quickly and, in addition, the belt may jump on the toothed pulleys of the crankshaft and camshafts, which leads to a disruption in the installation of the valve timing phases, loss of power, and engine damage.

You will need a 6 mm Allen key.



1. Remove the five bolts securing the upper timing belt cover…



2. …and remove the lid.



3. Check the tension of the timing belt by pressing your finger with a force of 100 N (10 kgf) on the middle of the toothed belt branch between the camshaft pulleys and measure the deflection of the toothed belt - the belt should deflect no more than 5-7 mm.





4. The check is also carried out by the position of mark 1 on the outer race of the tension roller, which should be opposite protrusion 2.

5. If the condition of the timing belt or its tension is unsatisfactory, replace the belt or adjust its tension accordingly (see "Replacing the timing belt and tension roller").

6. Install all parts in the reverse order of removal.
