The pads are replaced in the following cases:
- the thickness of the friction linings is less than the permissible value;
- the surface of the pads is oiled;
- the friction lining is loosely connected to the base;
- linings have deep grooves and chips.
You will need: key «on 7», flat-blade screwdriver, spudger, hammer, pliers, or bit to remove the return springs.
1. Engage 1st gear and place chocks under the front wheels.
2. Make sure the parking brake lever is pushed all the way down (the car is disinhibited).
3. Remove the wheel and clean the brake mechanism from dirt.
4. If the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir is at the mark «MAX» or approaches it, pump some of the fluid out of the tank, otherwise it may splash out when replacing the pads.
5. Remove the brake drum (see «Removal and installation of a brake drum of a back wheel»).
6. Use a beard or pliers to remove the upper return spring.
7. Similarly remove the lower coupling spring.
8. Remove the front shoe guide spring.
9. Remove the front block.
10. Remove expander bar.
11. Remove the rear shoe guide spring and then the rear shoe by disconnecting the actuating lever from the parking brake cable end.
12. Remove cotter pin.
13. Remove the support washer from the rear shoe drive lever pin.
14. Remove the rear shoe drive lever.
15. Press down on a finger of the drive lever and take out a finger from a block.
16. Install new pads in the reverse order of removal. When installing, insert the upper ends of the pads into the grooves of the piston.
17. Flatten the brake pads with two mounting spatulas to move the pistons towards the center of the cylinder. Install the brake drum in the reverse order of removal. With the vehicle on the ground, depress the brake pedal two or three times to bring the shoes to the drum.
