The AMT transmission is based on a five-speed manual gearbox 2180, the gear shifting processes are controlled by the synchronous operation of two electromechanical actuators, which, in turn, are controlled by the TCU transmission controller.

The shift actuator is installed in place to replace the standard cable shift mechanism.

A car with an AMT transmission does not have a clutch pedal; all clutch operation processes are automated, provided by electrical signals and processed by a clutch actuator.

All transmission modes are indicated by letter designations on the decorative cover of the selector and duplicated in digital form on the electronic display of the instrument cluster:
  • Operating mode indication: NRAM.
  • Indication of the engaged gear operating mode: 1 2 3 4 5.
  • All modes except R are indicated simultaneously with the gear number engaged, for example:

All modes except R are indicated simultaneously with the gear number engaged, for example:

The pedal assembly of a car with an AMT transmission is controlled exclusively by the right foot.

The transmission, in addition to the reverse gear, designated R, has two main driving modes:
  • automatic A, in which, depending on the engine speed and other parameters, fully automatic gear shifting is carried out without driver intervention;
  • manual mode M is carried out by the driver by lightly touching the selector contacts in the following positions:
    • "+" - upshift,
    • "-" - downshift.

The selector is easy to operate, with fixed mode positions, except for touches for upshifts and downshifts in M mode (+ and -).

The engine can only be started in neutral position N and with the brake pedal depressed. This is a safety requirement and the engine will not start in any other selector positions.

When turning the ignition key, there may be a delay of 2-3 seconds before the engine starts, this is due to the initialization procedure of the transmission control system.

Movement is possible after moving the selector to position A or M with the brake pedal pressed. When you press the accelerator pedal, the clutch engages and the car starts moving. If the accelerator pedal is not pressed, the car does not move, but can roll freely, despite the drive mode being engaged and the gear engaged. The AMT transmission does not have a creep mode by design.

If you move the selector to position M after starting the engine, 1st gear will be engaged. Then you can shift gears manually. In normal operating conditions, upshifting in M mode is carried out only by the driver in sequence 1-2-3-4-5 and in reverse order.

Be careful, when starting off and moving in first gear, you can reach maximum engine speed, this is done specifically for the purpose of driving up steep and long climbs using only first gear. When the engine reaches maximum speed in second and all other gears, the system will shift to a higher gear to prevent engine damage. Downshifting occurs automatically when the speed decreases, depending on the decrease in speed. The M mode allows for combined braking of the vehicle using the service brake and the engine by sequentially shifting gears to lower ones.

In all driving modes, delays are felt due to the operation of the gearbox synchronization system during the shifting process. Mode A is set for the most comfortable driving style, and the delays are somewhat longer than in mode M.

Modes A and M have a kick-down function, which is activated depending on the intensity of pressing the accelerator pedal; in mode M it is slower.

While driving, it is possible to move the selector lever from position A to position M and back. If you need to select an independent switching mode or while driving in mode A, you must first switch to a lower gear (for example, when overtaking by driving into the oncoming traffic lane), you can turn on the M mode, perform a maneuver and then return back to the A mode, and the system will turn on the gear corresponding to the speed. A similar change of driving mode from A to M is possible when driving on long uphill climbs.

When the lever is shifted from position A to position R while driving, the system will block the engagement of reverse gear. In this case, the R mode symbol indicator will flash, indicating to the driver that this shift is not possible.

To prevent transmission failure, the system will not allow the wrong gear to be engaged in any case.

If it is necessary to rock the car, for example, when slipping, it is possible to switch modes R - A and vice versa through N, but without delay in N and without pressing the brake pedal, provided that the speed does not exceed 3 km / h. At a speed above 3 km / h, switching from A to R or from R to A is only possible when pressing the brake. To successfully engage reverse gear, in some cases it is necessary to wait 8 seconds for the system to successfully process the function of ensuring the engagement of reverse gear.

The ignition can be switched off in any selector position. In this case, in the N position the car can roll and can be towed, in other selector positions the car will remain in the selected mode (R - in reverse gear, A and M - in first gear) and the clutch is closed. In any case, depending on the slope, it is necessary to ensure that the car does not roll spontaneously using the handbrake.

When entering steep climbs at low speed (such as overpass parking lots) it should be noted that when the engine speed drops below the minimum (650 min⁻¹), the clutch will disengage automatically to avoid engine stalling. On a slope, this may cause the vehicle to roll down. In this case, it is necessary to ensure movement with engine speeds exceeding the minimum.

If the battery is discharged, starting the engine from the wheels by towing is possible. To do this, accelerate the car in neutral N to a speed above 7 km/h, and then switch the selector to position A. The transmission controller will register the speed and activate the wheel-start function.

When the gear indicator in the instrument cluster comes on, it indicates a transmission fault. In this case, diagnostics of the AMT system using specialized diagnostic equipment is required. The shifts may be uncomfortable, very slow or abrupt.

When the clutch overheats, the "gear" indicator flashes and the clutch additionally pulsates during the start-up process to warn the driver. In this case, after the clutch has cooled down, the light will go out when the engine is restarted. If this does not happen, it is also necessary to carry out diagnostics of the AMT system using specialized diagnostic equipment.
