We assess the degree of wear of the rear wheel brake pads based on the condition of the front pad, which wears out faster than the rear one.
For this purpose, a viewing window is made in the brake mechanism shield, closed with a rubber plug.

We use a screwdriver to pry off the plug on the brake shield...

..and we take out the plug.
Through the window we assess the condition of the front brake shoe lining. If the lining thickness is less than 2.0 mm, the brake pads of both wheels must be replaced. For a more accurate assessment of the condition of the brake pads, remove the brake drum and inspect the pads. Separation of the pad from the base of the shoe is not permitted.

We measure the thickness of the brake pad using a caliper.
Then, having measured the thickness of the metal base of the pad, we calculate the thickness of the friction lining. To check the condition of the wheel cylinder and brake drum, lower the parking brake lever and remove the wheel.

Using a 12 mm spanner, unscrew the two brake drum mounting bolts.
We remove the brake drum. If the drum cannot be removed...

...then, turning it evenly, with a hammer with a plastic tip (or with a regular hammer through a wooden block) we strike the end of the drum.
We clean and inspect the drum; there should be no cracks or chips on it.
If the working surface is heavily worn, or if there are grooves, replace the brake drum.
To check the condition of the wheel cylinder sealing cuffs, move the edge of the boot from the cylinder body protrusion on each side in turn. If there is brake fluid under the boot, indicating a faulty seal, the wheel cylinder must be replaced.
Similarly, we check the condition of the pads, drum and wheel cylinder of the brake mechanism of the other wheel.
