The fluid poured into the hydraulic power steering system is designed for the entire service life of the vehicle. We check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir at each maintenance, as well as when we detect a fluid leak from the power steering hydraulic drive, when the steering efficiency decreases, or when extraneous noise (howling) appears when turning the steering wheel.

It is important to determine the location of the leak as accurately as possible, since in this case, most likely, it will be necessary to replace the worn or damaged part. The greatest difficulties in determining the location of the working fluid leak occur when the fluid flows out in small drops.

It is recommended to use the following technique:
  • with the engine off, wipe dry all steering components;
  • we check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir and, if necessary, bring it up to normal;
  • start the engine and turn the steering wheel several times to the extreme left position, and then to the extreme right position;
  • we find the exact location of the leak and eliminate the cause.

The power steering reservoir is located in the engine compartment on the left, on the front panel. Check the level of the working fluid in the power steering reservoir on a horizontal surface with the engine cold and not running.

The fluid level should be between the two marks on the tank cap indicator.

If the fluid level in the tank is below the lower mark, add fluid up to the upper mark.

Mixing different types of liquids is not permitted.

Tightly tighten the cap of the power steering reservoir.

Checking the performance of the brake booster

To check the functionality of the brake booster with the engine not running, press the brake pedal 5-6 times and, holding it down, start the engine. If the vacuum booster is working properly, the pedal should move slightly forward after starting the engine. If this does not happen or braking is not effective enough (the brake pedal has to be pressed with great force), it is necessary to check the tightness of the connections of the vacuum supply hose to the vacuum booster and the serviceability of the booster check valve or the booster itself.
