Gear Shift Lever Repair (Priora 2170)

The gear shift lever should rotate freely in the ball joint without sticking. Otherwise, check and replace the ball joint and spherical washer if necessary. If the lever does not return to its original position after being pushed down to the stop, check the spring and replace it if necessary.

Remove the floor tunnel lining (see "Removal and installation of floor tunnel linings").

You will need: a 13 mm wrench and thin-nosed pliers.

1. Remove the lever axle, plastic and spacer bushings (see "Replacing the gear shift lever axle bushings").

2. Pry it up with a screwdriver…

4. Remove the ball joint with the lever from the housing.

5. Remove the spring from the clip.

6. Inspect the reverse gear lock bracket cover…

7. …and a plastic axle stop. Replace parts if they are broken or show signs of wear.

8. To remove the trim, unscrew the two nuts and remove one bolt that secures it.

9. Remove the ball joint by moving the spherical washer apart.

10. Remove the spherical washer from the spherical pin of the lever.

11. This is what the gear shift lever parts look like.

12. Replace broken or badly worn spherical washer and ball joint.

13. Replace a broken or loose spring.

14. Assemble and install the gear shift lever in the reverse order, having first lubricated the ball joint of the lever and the inner cavity of the sleeve with consistent grease.
