It is necessary to purchase and carry a supply of engine oil and other working fluids with you on long trips, topping them up as necessary.
Taking into account the modern design of the car and technology, it seems useless to take some spare parts with you, since it is impossible to take everything, and most likely something that is not with you will fail. However, it is still worth paying attention to the most necessary consumables, such as bulbs for lighting devices, fuses, clamps of various diameters, wiper blades, spark plugs, a set of two wires in case the engine is started from external current sources (see «Starting the engine from additional current sources»), tow rope (see «Car towing»), cold welding, insulating tape (with its help, you can eliminate not only the malfunction of the wires, but also the leakage of hoses) and other spare parts at your discretion, depending on the condition of the car.
Be sure to check your tire pressure and tread before driving (see «Checking tire pressure» and see «Rims, tires and hubs - checking the technical condition»), as well as lighting fixtures (see «Outdoor lighting and light signaling devices - checking the technical condition») and battery to avoid short circuit and failure of electrical consumers (see «Battery - Maintenance»).
Be sure to check the condition of the spare wheel and bring the air pressure in it to normal. If the spare wheel has been damaged, replace it. Usually about «spare tire» remember only by puncturing a tire or damaging a wheel. Such forgetfulness on a long trip can play a cruel joke. Make sure the tire pump or compressor is in good condition, as well as the jack and wheel wrench. It will not be superfluous to check the presence of a warning triangle in the trunk.
Check the contents of the car first-aid kit according to the list attached to it, paying attention to the expiration date of medicines and drugs. It would be nice to supplement it with medicines from the home medicine cabinet at your own discretion or on the advice of your doctor. Expired medicines that are already expiring should be replaced.
And finally, when going on a long journey, do not load the car to the limit (do not exceed the permitted maximum weight specified in the technical data of the vehicle). Overloading leads to increased wear of tires and suspension parts and to loss of directional stability. If, despite the measures taken, a breakdown still occurs, it is better to have with you the telephones of any roadside assistance services and some cash.
