Attention. To prevent damage to the steering gear when removing the inner joints of the steering rods, be sure to use the Dir. 1306-01 device. The device is installed on the left side of the steering gear and fixes the angular position of the rack relative to the steering gear housing. Before installing the device on the steering gear, first remove the left protective cover.
Removal
Place the vehicle on a two-post lift, apply the parking brake and turn off the ignition.
Remove the front wheel.
Remove the outer tie rod end.
Remove the protective cover of the inner joint of the steering rod.
Unlock the steering wheel.
Install device 3, Figure 10-1, to secure rack 2 of the steering gear (device Dir. 1306-01).
Unscrew the inner joint from the end of the steering rack and remove it together with the steering rod (replacement head 21, ratchet, Dir. 1305-010 device).

Installation
Apply a high-strength locking compound to the threaded surface of the inner hinge (high-strength locking compound, part number 77 11 230 112).
Screw the inner joint together with the steering rod into the threaded hole in the steering rack. Tightening torque of the joint 80 N·m (8.0 kgf·m) (replacement head 21, ratchet, torque wrench, Dir. 1305-010 device).
Remove the device Dir. 1306-01 for fixing the steering rack.
Apply silicone grease to the steering rack and inner tie rod joint (silicone-containing grease, part number 77 11 236 168).
Install the protective cover for the inner joint of the steering rod.
Install the outer tie rod end.
Install the front wheel.
Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles.
